The Lenovo 00FP650 is a network interface adapter that slides into the ML2 slot of compatible System x servers and gives each system two ports capable of moving data at up to 40 gigabits per second. Because the card supports both standard Ethernet and FDR InfiniBand protocols through Virtual Protocol Interconnect, you can wire the same server for traditional IP traffic or for the lossless InfiniBand fabric used in many high performance clusters.
The ML2 form factor places the adapter on a dedicated connector that shares power and management signals with the motherboard. This approach helps the server maintain efficient airflow and can free up a valuable PCIe slot for other expansion cards. It also allows the adapter to draw only the power it needs, which matters when you are scaling to dozens or hundreds of nodes.
Performance is the centerpiece. Each port delivers 40 Gbps bandwidth and extremely short latency, so applications that rely on message passing, distributed storage, or real time analytics spend less time waiting for data to arrive. In a database or virtualization farm the adapter can accelerate east west traffic between servers; in a scientific compute cluster it can connect nodes to an InfiniBand backbone without requiring a second card.
Installation remains straightforward. The adapter fits neatly into most current Lenovo System x rack servers, and standard driver support makes it easy to integrate with common Linux distributions and virtualization platforms. Once in place the card provides a link that remains flexible and offers high bandwidth without forcing you to lock in to a single network type.
